Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords eligible students certain rights with respect to their education records. An “eligible student” under FERPA is a student who is 18 years of age or older their education records, request amendments to the records, and have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the records. FERPA ensures that educational institutions maintain the confidentiality of student information and handle it responsibly.

The Clery Act

The Clery Act, officially known as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, is a federal law that requires colleges and universities in the United States to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses. Enacted in 1990, the act aims to promote campus safety by ensuring transparency and providing students, parents, and employees with accurate information about campus crime and security policies. Institutions must publish an annual security report, maintain a public crime log, and issue timely warnings about potential threats to the campus community. The Clery Act helps create a safer environment by keeping the public informed and holding institutions accountable for campus safety.

The Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA)

The Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA), enacted in 1999, is a federal law that mandates financial institutions to protect the privacy of consumers’ personal financial information. The GLBA requires institutions to establish safeguards to ensure the security and confidentiality of customer data, disclose their information-sharing practices to consumers, and give consumers the right to opt-out of certain data sharing with non-affiliated third parties. By enforcing these provisions, the GLBA aims to protect consumers’ sensitive financial information from unauthorized access and misuse, fostering greater trust in the financial system.

Other Institutional Information

Federal legislation mandates the disclosure of key institutional information, including the cost of attendance, accreditation status, and details about academic programs. Additionally, institutions must provide information about facilities and services available to disabled students, financial assistance options, and the requirements and restrictions associated with Title IV funds. Refund policies must also be clearly communicated. This information can be found on the Accreditations page of the DTS website and is published annually in the DeHart Technical School Course Catalog & Student Handbook.

Net Cost Calculator

A net cost calculator is an online tool provided by colleges and universities to help prospective students estimate the actual cost of attending the institution. This calculator takes into account the total cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, room and board, and other expenses, and then subtracts potential financial aid such as grants, scholarships, and loans. By using the net cost calculator, students and their families can get a clearer picture of what they may need to pay out of pocket, helping them make more informed financial decisions about their education.
